A Surprise
Worth Remembering

The story
The surprise lasts a moment. The people who made it happen are what make the night worth remembering.
Alysa’s 30th birthday brought together a close group of family and friends for a surprise celebration. A coffee-inspired theme and dress code tied the gathering together in warm browns and cream. The decorations set the scene; her arrival supplied the reaction.
I photographed the reveal, the portraits, and the moments in between. The collection follows the party as it unfolded, from that first reaction to the laughter and movement later in the evening.
The setting & the reveal
Here comes
the birthday girl.
Before Alysa arrived, I needed to find a position for the surprise photograph. The split foyer and staircase made the angle tricky: the entrance was a tight space, and the reaction would happen quickly.
I worked out where to stand for the reveal. When she came through the door, the photographs caught her surprise and the smiles of the people around her.

The portraits & the in-between
Get everyone in.
Let the party happen.
A celebration makes room for both: photographs where everyone comes together for the camera, and the candid moments that happen while they are enjoying themselves.
I photographed Keion and Alysa together, smaller groups, and the wider gathering. Alongside those portraits are the conversations, hugs, and laughter that show how close this group is.

The details belong, too.
The cake and the small touches help bring the memory of the party back into focus.

Stay for the change in atmosphere.
Daytime portraits gave way to warm light, movement, and a different kind of party photograph.
On this occasion, I chose to stay beyond the booked coverage. There was an opportunity to make some fun nighttime party photographs, and I wanted to explore it.
That extra time added another side of the celebration to the collection: Keion and Alysa together later in the evening, laughter in the warm light, and frames that carried the movement of the night.

Make room for the light.
Strong backlight, deep shadow, and a closer view of the people in the room.
